LOVE HOPE COURAGE
AUGUST 2004
SUZIE'S LETTERS

AUGUST 6, 2004

Dear Friends,

At a small airport near the charming fishing village of Gig Harbor, I watch as a private airplane lands. Early in the morning I often take time to sit down and enjoy the view of such things; the still Harbor, Mount Rainier hovering over the water, and the breathtaking ranges of the Olympics and the Cascade stretching out before me.

As I consider the mystery and vastness of God, I also reflect on love as defined in scripture and as Han Suyin, a Chinese writer and physician described it:

"Love from one being to another can only be those two solitudes come nearer, recognize, protect, and comfort each other." Han Suyin

This time last year I was anxiously preoccupied by how to improve the financial stability of REACH. Now, in the summer of 2004, little has changed regarding that lingering anxiety. It's true that throughout the year, while I sometimes want to melt before stacks of logistical problems, I am gratefully distracted by those who "come nearer," recognizing needs, and acting to "protect and comfort" the children we serve. Still, the need for more funds remains very real.

Please take time to recognize the names on the letterhead, and remember the college students who volunteer their time to REACH - students from the University of Puget Sound, University of Washington, Wellesley, Seattle Pacific University, Whitworth College, Washington State University, Evergreen, Tacoma Community College, and Pierce Community College. There are residence interns, Fellows from various medical schools, and hundreds of others who work with us and reflect the love that you have for REACH.

This coming Labor Day week at a small airport near Gig Harbor private planes will land. Children infected with HIV/AIDS from various cities and states will jump out and plant their feet firmly on the ground. With laughter and anticipation, they will join 160 other children and their families in a safe haven free from social threat - Northwest REACH camp. All this is possible because you have chosen what God requires and what philosophers and poets affirm: Love - coming nearer, protecting, and comforting.

As I have said, year after year, we at REACH are indescribably grateful for your continued support and humbled by your faithfulness to us.

Blessings my friends,
Suzie
