As public as life is in our modern world, what with cell phones, ipods, cameras, email and interactive screens ever present, I dare say we are ever on the run and more and more detached from personal contact.

All the more necessary then is the daring use of time, energy and commitment to "recognize, protect, and comfort each other." It nearly seems that Han Suyin was predicting the work of REACH as we embrace those with heavy secrets and we cradle their souls.

Such work takes courage, brokenness, and a willingness to commit. REACH, through its programs, provides mentors for children and has initiated a similar program for adults who live with the complexities of HIV/AIDS. We provide a time of freedom from demanding routines and frequent reproach, time for play and laughter; a time of being served and valued. Through REACH, frequently marginalized families experience belonging to a community of love - with few conditions or restraints beyond common sense.

Pat Askern, an art therapist volunteer states, "I love the opportunity to draw closer to the children - to get past Mary's resistance - to feel the warmth of Jacob's appreciative smile - to see Spiderman get enthused about being a spotted dog, and a boy I referred to as 'Eagle-boy' thin and fragile as he appeared - turn out to be a truly confident and assured child of God."

It is a significant challenge for us to ask that for a time, you turn off the fascinating and distracting noises modernity offers and turn toward the joy that contact brings, to the wonder that results from real relationship with even just one great but suffering kid.
